Aldo Loris Rossi

Eliopolis, frammento metropolitano eco-compatibile, 1978

In the early 1960s, Aldo Loris Rossi developed an instrumental interest in the hypothesis of the utopian city. In reality, he used this to demolish the traditional criteria for constructing urban form. In our post-industrial cities, all redevelopment of territory and restructuring of urban zones is conceived of as eco-compatible “metropolitan fragments”, meaning that it combines economy and ecology. This new “eco-politan frontier”, in coherence and in balance with the environment, can nevertheless clash formally with its environment. What is involved rather for the architect is to establish plastically interactive relations with architecture being seen like a “prosthesis of nature”.
