OBRA

(USA, 1969, 1959)

Awarded Seoul’s Seim’s Kim Swoo Geun Preview Prize in 2014, New York-based OBRA was founded by Jennifer Lee and Pablo Castro. OBRA’s practice avoids developing a “personal architectural language” instead favoring an analysis of our word as a subject of study and of creation. From this perspective, OBRA conceives the discipline of architecture as a quest for anonymity, in contrast to an artistic gesture that values the individuality of the creator. For the Biennale d’Architecture d’Orléans they have created a pavilion drawn from an elementary geometric form, universal, public and open to all. Inside the hexagon pavilion images scroll across each of the sides becoming windows with views of landscapes. The rigorous structures that make up the screens are in direct confrontation with the elusive images being diffused. It is at the heart of paradoxes that OBRA commits itself to search the word, without naivety.
