Yamanashi Museum of Fruit, 1992

The Yamanashi Museum of Fruit, commissioned by an agricultural association, is situated north of Mount Fuji in Japan in a vast park of 195,000 m2. Dedicated to fruit, this region’s main source of wealth, the museum enables the flow between several elements, including three main buildings. Their forms represent a seed, the origin of fruit, at different stages of growth: the seed in the tree (a building named Fruit Plaza, in the shape of a short tree); the new seed germinating in the sun (the Tropical Greenhouse, a sort of slipper shell); and the seed in full growth (the Fruit Workshop, with an inflated appearance). This metaphoric path could also be construed as operating in the opposite direction. If one focuses on the fruit rather than the seed, this path takes the visitor from the fruit in formation (Workshop) to the overripe and bursting fruit (Place), by way of the ripening fruit on the tree (Greenhouse). Digital tools were used to facilitate the design of both the pure and complex forms: starting with simple and symmetrical forms, which are reworked thanks to CAD (computer-assisted design). They are then deformed by “warping”, moving points of the same picture on a particular part of it, thereby giving the impression of stretching. Though each of these buildings is different, they all share the same type of skin, in glass and steel, transparent and veined. Thus, “artificially recreating nature, the architecture becomes a landscape where nature and technology are no longer antagonists but appear as reciprocal and synthetic entities.”
