Orléans-Tours philosophical talks

Since 2014, the Rendez-vous Philosophiques d'Orléans-Tours have set themselves the mission of connecting philosophy to current issues, as well as training minds in debating and citizenship. For this new edition, the theme of animals and animality will be showcased.

Tha fantasy animal

Speaker: Thierry Hoquet

A specialist in the philosophy of the natural sciences and the philosophy of the Enlightenment, Thierry Hoquet was a professor at the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, then at the Université Paris 10 Nanterre. He has penned several notable books on Buffon and Darwin about the history and philosophy of biology.

On the occasion of this carte blanche, Thierry Hoquet will invite us to think of “the animal” not in general terms but as differentiated figures, giving rise to what is known as “a fantasy animal”.

The slaughterhouse: an architecture of torture and its reforms

A lecturer in philosophy and sociology at the Université de Toulouse, Aurélien Berlan conducts research into the social and political theory of industrial capitalism, the transformation of our relationships to animals and evolution of imaginaries of freedom. He is the author of La Fabrique des derniers hommes, Retour sur le présent avec Tönnie, Simmel et Weber (2012).

Aurélien Berlan will tell us about the paradox of current industrial policies, notably industrial farming, in the age of a new mass extinction of species.
