Paolo Soleri

Architect (1919 - 2013)

A former disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright and a major representative of visionary 20th century architecture, Paolo Soleri has devoted his life to dealing with the ecological and social concerns raised by modern urban life. To this end, he invented the science of “arcology”, which he defines as the total merger of architecture and ecology. Using thousands of often spectacular drawings, the architect studies compact and organic urban forms, encouraging an economy of resources and community life in harmony with nature and the cosmos. The city of Arcosanti, constructed by Soleri in the 1970s in the Arizona desert, remains the manifesto of that “realized utopia” which is still under construction.
