Present on the international stage since the late 2000s, the artist Federico Díaz (b. 1971) conducts research that is located at the intersection of mathematics, digital technology and biology, and that rests on a philosophical reflection. His works draw on computer generation software to activate or reveal complex processes objectivised by science. Often designed on site, his projects rely on experimentation with multimedia tools, cutting-edge technologies and a biomorphic approach to space in order to define places of interaction and meditation. Díaz does not consider the work of art as an artefact, but as an overall visual and acoustic field through which to propose a new critical and sensitive articulation of the relationship between mankind and the universe. Díaz’s works therefore operate a kind of ‘virtual synthesis’ defining a new perceptual horizon based on an operational fusion of nature and artificiality. In 2001, the installation Generatrix presented an artificial organism that reacted to the movements of the museum’s visitors. In 2005, for the Ars Electronica festival in Linz, a work entitled Sakura proposed a critical reflection on the phenomena of technological hybridization involving the human body. Lastly, in 2010 the artist created a monumental sculptural installation in the court of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art: constructed out of 420,000 machine-made spheres and assembled by robots, Geometry Death-Frequency-141 represents a gigantic wave as though frozen in space.

The founder of the Supermedia Studio at the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague, where he currently lives and works, Federico Díaz has taken part in many exhibitions (Royal Institute of British Architects, ZKM Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Venice Biennale, ArchiLab 2013, etc.). He has given numerous talks, notably at Columbia University in New York and ETH Zurich (within the department of Gramazio & Kohler). He also collaborated for several years with the Czech company E-zone, which specialises in the integration of abstract art and cutting-edge technologies.
