For Pier Vittorio Aureli and Martino Tattara, theoretical research on architecture and the city are an integral part of their architectural “production”, for which writing is an instrument for projecting their ideas. Through their firm DOGMA, they are working on a “radical” return to architecture, considered here as a rational tool for delimiting space. Seeking to reappraise the political status of the architect vis-à-vis his production, DOGMA succeeds in carrying out an original reading of the critical sources dating from 1960s Italy, from Archizoom to UFO, from Aldo Rossi to Superstudio. They propose in turn, in opposition to the architecture of their times, non-figurative architecture, whose primary purpose is to be a “framework” for living. For DOGMA, giving a limit to architecture, designing its framework, is a way of restoring it with an operative language. More than ad hoc solutions, they aim to develop a new “grammar for the city”.

The DOGMA firm was founded in 2003 in Rotterdam by Pier Vittorio Aureli and Martino Tattara. In parallel to its experimental and design activities (administrative city for 500,000 inhabitants in South Korea, 2005), it also conducts theoretical work, publishing numerous articles and books (The Project of Autonomy: Politics and Architecture Within and Against Capitalism, Pier Vittorio Aureli, 2008). Recognized on the international architectural scene, they also teach at the Berlage Institute, the Architectural Association, Delft University of Technology and at Columbia University.
