Aldo Loris Rossi

Complesso parrochiale di Santa-Maria della Libera, 1965

Built in Portici in unshuttered rough concrete, like almost all the architect’s projects, this parish complex is organized around structural nodes from which circular volumes develop, interrupted by vertical elements. Here, Aldo Loris Rossi developed his formal vocabulary focused on centrifugal/centripetal opposites, contrast between vertical and horizontal elements, and the inclusion of conspicuously salient volumes. We see here his combined desire to apply a rigorous method and to attach to it a complete freedom of expression. The overall composition organizing circular volumes is particularly suited to isolation and gathering.
